Covid-19 progress
Due to Covid-19, lockdown has been a very challenging time for people looking for jobs. Here’s some information about one of our participants who was successful in their job mission, supported by his Communities for Work Mentor, Cerian.
D had support from a Communities for Work mentor for over a year and during that time he showed great determination and commitment. When D referred to us he was socially isolated due to his health conditions and felt he was limited to certain jobs because of this, but he knew he wanted a person facing role where he could help people who were most in need. With support of the project D completed work placements, training courses and started volunteering. All of which increased his skills and confidence as well as greatly improving his mental health.
Unfortunately, when lockdown was enforced D started to struggled with his mental health again as he could no longer volunteer and his interaction with people decreased due to living on his own. D’s mentor continued to keep in regular contact with him over emails and phone calls and supported him to engage with tasks which could keep him occupied whilst also increasing his skills. A job opportunity arose for the local Citizens Advice and D’s mentor thought he would be perfect for it. D was very interested in the role as he has been wanting to pursue a career in helping people due to all the help he has received in the past. D completed the application with the help of his mentor and was successful in securing an interview.
D and his mentor thought it would be a good idea to practice his interview preparation, so spoke to the Working Denbighshire Employment Co-ordinator to practice a number of video calls. It was decided to go with this approach due to the social restrictions brought by Covid-19, meaning many employers would be completing interviews via technology rather than face to face.
D found out the next day that he was successful at interview and he is now in full time employment for the first time in 9 years. D showed great determination throughout his participation on the project, and even though he has struggled during the very uncertain times, just as many people have, he did not let this stand in his way of reaching his goal of returning to employment.
